SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Sebastien Auger made 44 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the visiting Acadie-Bathurst Titan 2-1 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. Auger was at his best in the third period when he stopped all 18 shots he faced to preserve the one-goal victory. Stephen Anderson and Spencer Smallman scored for the Sea Dogs (2-1-0) while Oliver Cooper assisted on both. Dominic Beauchemin had the lone goal for the Titan (2-1-0) as Mason McDonald turned away 32-of-34 shots in defeat. Beauchemin opened the scoring off a pass from Robert Pelletier 11:35 into the first period, however Smallman responded for Saint John six minutes later to even the score after 20 minutes of play. After a scoreless second period Anderson broke a 1-1 tie at 9:45 of the third with a power-play goal to put the Sea Dogs ahead. Any chance for Acadie-Bathurst to tie the game was shut down by Auger, who came up big on the penalty kill after Jeremy Doucet went to the box for tripping at 16:47 Saint John went 1 for 7 on the power play while the Titan failed to score on five chances with the man advantage. Armada 4 Cataractes 2 SHAWINIGAN, Que. -- Marcus Hinds scored two goals in the third period and set up another in the second as Blainville-Boisbriand doubled up the Cataractes. Christopher Clapperton and Nikita Jevpalov also scored for the Armada (4-0-0) while Guillaume Decelles stopped 23 shots for the win. Matthew Boudreau and Simon Boudreau scored power-play goals for Shawinigan (0-3-1) and Frederick Gaudreau assisted on both. Marvin Cupper allowed four goals on 28 shots in defeat. Olympiques 6 Huskies 4 ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. -- Emile Poirier had two goals and four points as Gatineau downed the Huskies. Jonathan Bourcier, Vaclav Karabacek, Alexandre Carrier and Jean-Simon Deslauriers also scored for the Olympiques (3-1-0) as Simon Tardif-Richard chipped in with two assists. Liam OBrien and Marcus Power had a goal and an assist for Rouyn-Noranda (1-2-1) and Gabriel Slight and Julien Nantel each scored once. In his QMJHL debut, Anthony Brodeur made 18 saves for the win as Alexandre Belanger stopped 20 shots in defeat. Tigres 4 Foreurs 3 VAL-DOR, Que. -- Carl-Antoine Delisle scored three times and set up one more and Brandon Whitney made 44 saves as Victoriaville squeezed past the Foreurs. Mark Tremaine also scored for the Tigres (3-1-0) and Alex Filiatrault had two assists. Anthony Mantha and Nicolas Aube-Kubel each had a goal and an assist for Val-dOr (1-3-0) and Randy Gazzola scored once. Francois Tremblay made 17 saves in a losing cause. Jason Campbell Jersey. QUARTERBACKS Colin Kaepernick (at Rams)This is more of a reminder, since we featured Kaepernick in this space last week. While the 49ers played coy about who their starter would be, Kaepernick was the one under centre on Sunday, throwing for 231 yards and a touchdown, while adding 27 yards on the ground and a rushing score. Kaepernick has helped give the 49ers a whole new dimension on offence and it would be a mistake for them to go back to the game manager Alex Smith. Kaepernick is a borderline QB1 the rest of the way. Jake Locker (vs. Texans)Locker had a nice game last week, posting 261 passing yards, 21 rushing yards, and throwing for two touchdowns against the Jaguars. Much like Kaepernick, Lockers value is increased due to his ability to make plays with his legs. Titans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was shown the door on Monday, so the team may be willing to open up the offence a little more down the stretch. Locker is a QB2, with QB1 upside as he faces a Texans defence that has suffered a variety of injuries and is now vulnerable to the pass. Others to consider - Ryan Fitzpatrick (vs. Jaguars), Chad Henne (at Bills), Ryan Tannehill (vs. Patriots) RUNNING BACKS Knowshon Moreno, Denver (vs. Buccaneers)Eagles rookie Bryce Brown should have been picked up last week. If he wasnt, then he should be the top choice among running backs this week after a big game on Monday Night Football. After Brown, Moreno earns top honours as he became a surprise starter on Sunday morning. Not only did Moreno start, but he dominated carries in the Broncos backfield, rendering rookie Ronnie Hillman useless. Moreno has a tough matchup this week and is a health risk, but Denvers schedule down the stretch is appealing and he could make an impact as part of a high-powered Broncos attack. Michael Bush (vs. Seahawks)Its been a relatively quiet season for Bush, but with Matt Forte likely to miss this week with an ankle injury, Bush becomes the lead back for the Bears. The Seahawks are one of the leagues best defences, but they have begun to give up yards on the ground in recent weeks. Bush will always be a threat for goal line carries, but now he should add enough yardage to make him a solid RB2 this week. DeAngelo Williams (at Chiefs)Another backup that could be thrust into the starting lineup due to injury, Williams took over for Jonathan Stewart late in the game Monday night. Stewart has re-injured his ankle and his status for Sunday is in doubt. Williams had just 11 carries for 21 yards against the Eagles, but a matchup with the Chiefs where he doesnt have to share the load is enticing. Rashad Jennings (at BBills)When Maurice Jones-Drew was sidelined, Jennings was unable to take advantage of his new starting role.dddddddddddd The team benched him in favour of Jalen Parmele, but now Parmele is injured as well. With a second chance to showcase his talents before becoming a free agent in the off-season, Jennings will likely start versus the Bills, who have given up the most fantasy points to running backs this season. Others to consider - RB Jacquizz Rodgers (vs. Saints), Bilal Powell (vs. Cardinals), Daniel Thomas (vs. Patriots), David Wilson (at Redskins), Shane Vereen (at Dolphins) WIDE RECEIVERS WR Ryan Broyles (vs. Colts)There are several interesting options at wide receiver this week, who could step right into the WR3 slot on your roster. Broyles made the most of his opportunity on Thanksgiving, as the 510, 188-pound pass catcher hauled in six catches on 12 targets for 126 yards. Broyles looked crisp running his routes and appeared to be on the same page with quarterback Matthew Stafford, something that cant be said for Titus Young, who he replaced. Broyles is expected to continue to start across from Calvin Johnson and will have a great matchup this week against the Colts secondary. T.Y. Hilton (at Lions)The third rounder has become a playmaker for Indianapolis, both on offence and special teams. Hilton has to fight with Donnie Avery for playing time, but he has excelled when on the field and is a threat to score at any given moment. The Lions arent shy about giving up big yardage in the passing game and Andrew Luck will look to capitalize by hitting his receivers deep. Davone Bess (vs. Patriots)Early in the season, all the excitement in the Dolphins receiving corps was focused on Brian Hartline. However, in the last few weeks Bess has become the teams leading receiver. Bess has had no fewer than six targets in any game this season and is on pace for over 1,000 receiving yards on the year. With two double-digit fantasy point games in a row, Bess will now square off with the Patriots, who have given up the fifth most fantasy points to opposing receivers. Others to consider - Julian Edelman (at Dolphins), Dwayne Harris/Cole Beasley (vs. Eagles), Mohamed Sanu (at Chargers), Chris Givens (vs. 49ers) TIGHT ENDS Marcedes Lewis (at Bills)Count Lewis among the Jaguars pass catchers who are benefitting from Chad Henne being at the helm. Lewis is a solid red zone threat and has two scores since Henne has taken over. With tight end being a very tough position to find quality replacements, Lewis has as good a shot as any to find the end zone against the Bills. Others to consider - Dallas Clark (at Broncos), Dennis Pitta (vs. Steelers), Rob Housler (at Jets) ' ' '
HALIFAX - Through 18 holes, defending champion Jhonattan Vegas never trailed at the Telus World Skins Game. But Englands Paul Casey needed just one shot to bring Vegas -- and the house -- down in a $100,000, closest-to-the-pin shootout to capture the two-day event. After only one skin and $15,000 on at Glen Arbour Golf Course, Casey finished with eight skins and $185,000 thanks to a brilliant stroke in the shootout. Vegas, who led after the opening day and throughout regulation play, finished second with five skins and $85,000. He was shut out on the back nine despite never losing the lead until Casey took the final four skins in the tiebreaker. Swedens Carl Pettersson (three skins, $60,000), Calgarys Stephen Ames (one skin, $15,000) and American Lucas Glover (one skin, $15,000) rounded out the field. Youth Greg Hardy Jersey. ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- Roman Horak had a hat trick to lead the Abbotsford Heat to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Marlies in American Hockey League action Friday night. Horak scored three times in a span of six minutes 32 seconds, giving him 10 goals in nine games this season. It was the first professional hat trick for Horak, who played 61 games for the Calgary Flames last season. "Hes on fire, thats for sure," said Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward. "Im just real excited for the kid. Hes well-prepared to play every game." Quintin Laing had a goal and an assist, while Sven Baertschi and Ben Walter each had two assists for Abbotsford (6-1-2). Horak was promoted to the top line along side Baertschi and Walter and it worked. "Ive said it many times that Ive been lucky," said Horak. "Obviously the goals come easier when you play with guys like Ben and Sven. Its a pleasure to play with them." Leland Irving stopped 25 shots in the win, just his second start of the season. Paul Ranger had a goal an assist for the visiting Marlies (3-4-1), with Spencer Abbott scoring the other goal. Mark Owuya made 15 saves for Toronto. He made his first start of the season after playing 19 games with the Marlies last season. The 23-year-old Swede has been sharing the crease with Ben Scrivens and Jussi Rynnas. The Marlies opened the scoring just 2:31 into the first period. Ranger centred the puck to Abbott in the slot, and though Irving stopped Abbotts initial shot and Greg McKeggs attempt at the rebound went off the post, the puck came right back to Abbott who buried it for hhis first of the season.dddddddddddd The Heat tied the game on the power play with 2.4 seconds to go in the first. Steve McCarthys point shot was deflected by Horak with Laing drawing the second assist. "It completely swung the momentum," Irving said of Horaks equalizer. "In the second period our guys really got going, drawing some penalties and getting some opportunities that way Horak gave his club the lead just 63 seconds into the second period. Baerschis point shot made its way to the front of the net where Ben Walter took a swipe at it before Horak buried it. The Czech winger completed the natural hat trick at 6:29. Walter tried to jam the puck home but as he was knocked off the puck, which moved back to Horak who wristed it over an off-balance Owuya, giving him 10 goals on the year. The Marlies got one back short handed at 9:51. Jerry DAmigo led a two-on-one and got a shot off before being driven into the corner. Ranger swooped in and roofed the rebound for his first of the season to make it 3-2. Irving was less than spectacular in the beginning of the game but made a few clutch stops as the contest went on, including a breakaway stop on Joe Colborne with five minutes to go in the second and a big stop on a short-handed three-on-two seven minutes into the third. The Heat got some breathing room when they scored on the tail end of an extended five-on-three power play. Joe Callahans point shot deflected off Laing and in for the captains first goal of the season. NOTES: Abbotsfords penalty kill has now killed 39 of its 40 opportunities this season. ' ' '
Seth Griffith extended his point streak to 13 games as the London Knights blanked the host Owen Sound Attack 3-0 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action. The 19-year-old forward scored once for London and has nine goals and 17 assists during his streak. He now has 19 goals and 44 points in 26 contests, which is good for second in OHL scoring. Jake Patterson stopped all 21 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season. Matt Rupert had a goal and an assist for the Knights (19-5-0), who have won 11 games in a row, while Chris Tierney scored once. Jordan Binnington turned away 37-of-40 shots in a losing cause for the Attack (17-5-3), who had their three-game winning streak halted. Binnington, who has had a shutout in his each of his previous three starts, went 207:22 without giving up a goal before Griffith beat him at 5:54 of the second period. At Owen Sound, Ont., after a scoreless first period, Griffith and Tierney scored less than five minutes apart in the second period to give London a controlling 2-0 lead. The scouting agency – which just released another set of its monthly rankings of the top draft eligible prospects – held firm to the top three prospects from its October list. Halifax Mooseheads centre Nathan MacKinnon remained the number one prospect after racking up 18 goals and 32 points in just 20 games so far this season. Seth Jones – a big defender for the WHLs Portland Winterhawks – remained in second while Finnish dynamo Aleksandr Barkov held on to the number three spot. From there, however, the deck got shuffled. MacKinnons Mooseheads teammate Jonathan Drouin jumped the queue in the top 10, going from his 10th-overall ranking in October to the fourth spot this month. Said one scout of Drouin: “Can not say enough good things about this player... with added size and griit he would challenge Nathan for Number One overall.dddddddddddd” His big surge moved a pair of centres – the Ottawa 67s Sean Monahan and Edmonton Oil Kings Curtis Lazar – down to fifth and sixth respectively. Going into Mondays game against the Sharks, the Canucks were fourth in the Western Conference with 44 poinnts - the same number as division-leading Minnesota.dddddddddddd With the Northwest Division title still in their sights and an eight-point cushion on ninth place in the conference, the team is looking to add and not subtract going into Wednesdays trade deadline. "I cant tell you what other teams are doing," head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters on Monday. "I can tell you were not sellers." Luongo, 33, has a 7-4-3 record this season with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. He has nine years remaining after this season on a 12-year deal he signed with the Canucks prior to the 2010-11 season. His contract carries an average annual value of $5.333 million. ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball has abandoned its attempt to start an international draft of amateur players next year, likely pushing the matter back to collective bargaining for the labour contract that will start in 2017. Under the five-year labour deal agreed to in November 2011, the sides held discussions about a draft and MLB had the right to inform the union by Saturday if it planned to start one next year. If MLB had given that notification, the union would have had until June 15 to veto it. The sides said Friday that talks had ended. "At this time, the players are not prepared to accept an international draft," union head Michael Weiner said in a statement. "The MLBPA will continue to discuss with players and the commissioners office the many issues facing its international members." MLB began restraints on international signings last summer. Since there will be no draft, the system of a signing bonus pool with penalties for exceeding thresholds will remain in place. For the period that began last July 2 and ends June 15, the threshold was $2.9 million. For 2013-14, the thresholds are based on reverse order of winning percentage in 2012. The Houston Astros have the highest pool at $4,943,700 and the Washington Nationals the lowest at $1,846,900, resulting in overall less money available for international players without teams incurring penalties. For both 2012-13 and 2013-14, a teams six-highest signing bonuses up to $50,000 will not count toward its pool, and bonuses below $7,500 will not be included. Only players from the U.S., Canada and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico are eligible for the current amateur draft, which started in 1965. MLB said the parties couldnt agree "on some of the mechanics and procedures related to such a draft." "The parties intend to continue to discuss international amateur talent issues," it said in a statement. Womens Shane Vereen Jersey. CLEVELAND -- Rob Chudzinski might get a third shot at coaching the Browns. Maybe this time as the head man. A person familiar with the meeting said Chudzinski, Carolinas offensive co-ordinator the past two seasons, interviewed Wednesday with the Browns. Chudzinski had two previous stints as an assistant with Cleveland, the team he rooted for as a kid growing up in Toledo, Ohio. Chudzinski visited the teams facility in Berea, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams are not confirming any interviews. Chudzinskis interview comes one day after the Browns met with another former assistant, Marc Trestman, currently coach of the CFLs Montreal Alouettes. The 44-year-old Chudzinski has spent the past two seasons with the Panthers working with quarterback Cam Newton. Carolina finished fifth in total offence in 2011 and 12th last season under Chudzinski. He was Clevelands tight ends coach in 2004, but was fired along with the rest of Butch Davis staff. He returned to the club in 2007 as the offensive co-ordinator for Romeo Crennel. Last year, Chudzinski interviewed for head coaching jobs with St. Louis, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. Chudzinskis connections with the Browns run deep. He grew up pulling for Cleveland and was thrilled when his first NFL coaching job was on Davis staff. After he left Cleveland the first time, he spent two seasons as San Diegos tight ends coach, working with perennial Pro Bowl standout Antonio Gates, before he was hired by Crennel in 2007. That year, the Browns won 10 games -- their most wins since 1999 -- and had four players make the Pro Bowl. However, 2008 didnt go nearly as well as injuries and a six-game losing streak to close the season resulted in a 4-12 record and the firing of Crennel. Clevelands offence sputtered in Chudzinskis second year. He went back to the Chargers for two more seasons before he was hired in Carolina. FOX Sports reported the team interviewed Cincinnati defensive co-ordinator Mike Zimmer, the first known defensive coach to meet with the Browns. The team is also planning to meet with Indianapolis offensive co-ordinator Bruce Arians as the Browns continue looking for their sixth coach since 1999. Zimmer, who has never been a head coach, has run the Bengals defence since 2008. Before joining Cincinnatis staff, the 56-year-old worked in Dallas and Atlanta. He coached Browns linebacker Scott Fujita with the Cowboys. "Mike Zimmer is a damn good football coach," Fujita posted on his Twitter page. Fujita also worked with Zimmers son, Adam, in New Orleans. Under Zimmer, the Bengals finished this season sixth in yards allowed and eight in points..dddddddddddd He has previously interviewed for head coaching jobs in Miami and Tampa Bay. Tragedy struck Zimmer in 2009, when his wife, Vikki, died unexpectedly. The couple had been married 27 years. She made a tradition of baking treats for defensive players on Mondays after a victory. After meeting with Chudzinski and Zimmer, the Browns are expected to interview Arians. The Colts have granted the Browns permission to speak with Arians, who was released from an Indianapolis hospital Wednesday after being treated for a medical condition that caused him to miss Sundays playoff game. The 60-year-old fell ill during the teams pregame breakfast and was hospitalized in Baltimore. He returned to Indiana and was admitted to another hospital as doctors tried to determine the extent of his health problem. His agent, Mike Brown, said Arians was discharged and is finalizing details to begin interviews for head coaching jobs. San Diego, Philadelphia and Chicago are also reportedly interested in Arians, who has worked with quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and rookie Andrew Luck. Arians took over as Indys interim coach this season while coach Chuck Pagano was being treated for leukemia. The Colts went 9-3 with Arians in charge. Arians also has ties to the Browns, serving as their offensive co-ordinator from 2001-03. His only head coaching experience was at Temple in the 1980s. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner are in Week 2 of their search to find a "strong leader" to take over the Browns, who went 5-11 this season and fired Pat Shurmur. Haslam and Banner spent last week in Arizona, where they came close to a deal with Chip Kelly but backed away because of his uncertainty about jumping to the NFL. Kelly ultimately decided to stay at the school. The Browns also are known to have met with former Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals defensive co-ordinator Ray Horton, former Syracuse coach Doug Marrone and Penn States Bill OBrien. Marrone was hired by Buffalo earlier this week while OBrien chose to stay with the Nittany Lions. On Monday, the Browns interviewed Trestman, who has met with the Chicago Bears about their coaching vacancy. Its not yet known if the Browns contacted former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who told Newsday on Tuesday that he hopes to one day coach in the NFL again. Cowher worked as an assistant in Cleveland in the 1990s. He has been a broadcaster since 2006 and has teased in the past about a return to the sideline. Cowhers background and success are no secret to Haslam, who owned a minority share of the Steelers before buying the Browns for $1 billion from Randy Lerner this summer. ' ' '
